Public Health event connects families to dental care

Data show more than half of California kindergarteners have experienced tooth decay. Partners provided free dental services for more than 100 children.

Dental care is health care. On May 9, the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department hosted the 2nd Annual Happy Teeth Event, during which Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) colleagues and partners at the Healthier Kids Foundation provided community dental services.

Total free resources provided at the event:

  • Dental screenings and fluoride varnish application for 152 people
    • 118 kids ages 5 and younger
  • 20 patients scheduled for urgent dental appointments.

Data show that more than half of California kindergarteners have experienced tooth decay, which rises to over 70% by third grade. Dental decay and poor gum health often go unseen in children who don't have enough access to care and contribute to school absenteeism. Baby teeth should not be overlooked as they are crucial for healthy growth; thus, parents and caregivers should prioritize their child's oral health. The good news is that tooth decay is preventable.

"The impact of mouth diseases like cavities and gum disease on our daily lives is profound," said Dr. Sarah Rudman, Deputy Health Officer at the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department. "We know that children's self-esteem, school performance, sleep, nutrition, and overall health are affected by their oral health."

The Local Oral Health Program at the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department works with school districts, County agencies, non-profits, medical and dental providers to help people access the oral health programs and services they need most.

Most people do not know that, like vaccinations, a dental exam is required before students enter public school for the first time in kindergarten or first grade. The state of California calls this the Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment requirement.

Remember, you are eligible for free dental services with Medi-Cal insurance.
