East San Jose PEACE Partnership
The East San Jose PEACE (Prevention Efforts Advance Community Equity) Partnership is a group of residents and organizations working to build a healthy, peaceful, and empowered community by preventing and addressing violence and trauma.
In East San Jose, residents experience more violence and trauma than elsewhere in the County of Santa Clara. This community struggles with higher rates of hospitalizations due to assaults and firearms and more violent crimes, such as domestic violence. Experiencing violence and trauma, especially multiple kinds of violence over a long period of time, results in poor health and life outcomes. These include heart disease, increased risk for eating disorders, substance abuse, depression, and anxiety.
Despite these negative community experiences, the people of East San Jose continue to build upon their resiliency and strengths to form peace and prosperity.
Uniting East San Jose for health equity
Health equity is when everyone has a fair opportunity to be healthy. That means barriers need to be addressed like poverty, racism, and other forms of discrimination. Removing these barriers removes the conditions they create that make it harder to be healthy, such as lack of access to good jobs, safe environments, quality education, housing, and healthcare.
The East San Jose PEACE Partnership is developing a comprehensive racial and health equity effort to prevent and reduce violence and trauma through the Accountable Communities for Health (ACH) model. The ACH model brings together health care providers to align with and work alongside education and justice partners, community and economic empowerment organizations, local government agencies, and community members to reduce violence and trauma.
The PEACE Partnership builds on decades of partnerships, initiatives and relationships to improve the health and wellness of the region. Reducing violence and trauma is just the first step. The new partnerships fostered by PEACE Partnership will make it possible to lift the voices of those most affected by violence and trauma and improve the health and well-being of the County of Santa Clara for many years to come.
